Easy way to put beta apps onto pres

Brian Jost created an excellent app for downloading application directly into your pre called FileCoaster. In co-operation with preCentral.net you can now download applications that are not part of the Palm Application Catalog. The only problem is they need to be part of preCentral's app gallery or type in a very long url, provided the app is even hosted somewhere where there is a URL. This meant it was impractical to use FileCoaster to test "work in progress" apps on the pr?.

To overcome this limitation, Sierra Blanco Systems is proud to introduce Loader. Loader is a simple service to allow webOS developers to upload an IPK (or any other other) file to our site so that they can then download and install the application using FileCoaster. I find this a lot easier than breaking out the USB cable, especially if you want to make it available for multiple beta testers.

The steps are pretty easy.

  1. Go to loader.SierraBlanco.com using PC web browser.
  2. Enter a simple UN/PW, select file to upload, and then upload it.
  3. Go to loader.SierraBlanco.com using pr? web browser.
  4. Enter UN/PW and choose Login. URL for file will then appear.
  5. Copy URL and past into FileCoaster.
  6. Install application using FileCoaster.
  7. Go back to web and press clear file to remove UN/PW/file from site. Even if not cleared explicitly, information will be automatically erased after 24 hrs.

The username and password are meant mainly as a mean to identify your upload and not for security. It is also not permanent, accounts are automatically deleted after 24 hours. And of course, we cannot guarantee anything. As they say, "No warantee express or implied". However, we do want to make this as useful as possible to the webOS community, so email us with comments, issues, and other suggestions at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots.
